Scotch Whisky has officially been registered as a GI in Laos, only the second international GI in the country after Champagne.

Responding to the announcement, Lindesay Low, Deputy Director for Legal Affairs at the SWA said: “We are very pleased that Laos has become the latest country in which Scotch Whisky has officially been registered as a GI. Securing GI protection is an important milestone in ensuring that consumers know that they are drinking authentic Scotch Whisky. Exports of Scotch Whisky have seen strong growth throughout Southeast Asia in recent years, which looks set to continue as consumer knowledge around Scotland’s national drink increases.”

Earlier this week the SWA's in-country Legal firm attended a ceremony to mark the signing of the GI certificate, alongside the Laotian Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property and the Vice-Minister for Science.
