Pub re-opening boost for Scotch Whisky industry

The SWA has welcomed the announcement that pubs, bars and the hospitality industry can re-open in England from 4th July.

Commenting on the announcement that the hospitality sector can re-open from 4th July in England, Chief Executive of the SWA Karen Betts said:

“The announcement that pubs, bars and the hospitality industry can re-open in England from 4th July is very welcome and will come as a relief to many business owners.  It’s important to the spirits industry too, including to Scotch Whisky distillers, because the on-trade across the UK is vital to our sales and our recovery.

“The move from 2m to 1m+, in line with World Health Organisation guidance, is important because it makes the reopening of pubs, bars and restaurants viable.  Consumers will now be able to socialise again but in a way that also keeps them and staff safe.  Scotch Whisky companies are working with hospitality businesses to help them put social distancing measures in place in compliance with government guidance, sharing the best practice that we have developed working with our partners in the hospitality industry across our global markets.

“We hope that the hospitality sector will be able to reopen in Scotland soon too, following the Scottish government’s current review of the social distancing rules.  A safe reopening soon is key to the survival of many businesses in the hospitality sector. The SWA is about to launch a mentoring gateway to support local hospitality businesses and share best practice when they are able to re-open.”
