Scotch Whisky is the world's number one
internationally traded spirit drink, with over 90% of sales taking
place in its 200 export markets. Last year, exports soared to
a record £4.3
The European Union (EU) is the industry’s single largest market. Exports of Scotch Whisky to other EU Member States were worth £1.33 billion in 2012. Total sales within the EU - including the UK - amounted to over half a billion bottles.
Annual sales equate to more than one billion bottles. This achievement earned the UK balance of trade £135 per second in 2012. But Scotch Whisky continues to face barriers to trade which restrict market penetration in many countries. The SWA strives to break down these barriers.
