Scotch Whisky distillers are involved in a wide range of initiatives to encourage responsible enjoyment of their brands, including the use of unit labelling, responsibility messages on bottles and in adverts, and server training.

This brochure highlights industry efforts to promote responsible alcohol consumption and focuses on activities within the UK. Many of our members are involved with social aspects organisations and activities to promote responsible drinking in other markets around the world.

Social Responsibility Standards for the Production and Sale of Alcoholic Drinks in the UK

Otherwise known as the 'Standards Document', this document was jointly launched by the UK Government and 16 trade associations, including the SWA, in November 2005.

The document sets out industry good practice and advice in a cohesive set of standards that apply across the entire supply chain.

European Spirits Organisation (CEPS) Charter on Responsible Alcohol Consumption

Further afield, the Association contributed to the development of the CEPS Charter, launched in November 2005.

The Charter, which has been signed and adopted by all CEPS members including the Association, covers the following issues:

  • Responsible drinking messages
  • Codes of conduct on marketing spirit drinks 
  • Product development 
  • Underage drinking
  • Drinking and driving
  • Education


 

The CEPS First Year Report sets out progress on the implementation of the Charter commitments.
